in the east — regal, purple-robed.

One shore disappeared behind me

and another beckoned.

that I forgot the person I had been

as easily as the clouds drifting overhead.

My hands parted the water.

The wind pressed at my back, wings

and my soul floated over the whitecapped waves.

live along some distant day into the answers.”

— Ranier Maria Rilke, LETTER TO A YOUNG POET

a square foot. As
though our garden
could be one bean
and we’d rejoice if
it flourishes, as
though one bean
could nourish us.
